Fibre Optic Cabling Installation

When distance, speed and resilience are non-negotiable, fibre optic cabling is the answer. If you need to connect buildings across a campus, establish a high-bandwidth backbone between floors, or deliver fast, stable connectivity to a server room, fibre optic cabling installation provides the performance that copper simply can’t match.

FlexNet has been designing and installing fibre optic cabling solutions for businesses across the UK since 2012. Our engineers are experienced in both single-mode and multimode fibre installations, across a wide range of commercial, industrial and enterprise environments. From fibre optic installation in a single comms room to multi-site backbone deployments, we deliver to the same high standard every time.

Fibre Optic Cable Types – What’s Right for Your Network?

Choosing the correct fibre optic cable type is an important early decision in any cabling project. The two primary fibre optic cable types are:

Multimode Fibre (MMF) Multimode fibre is designed for shorter distances, typically up to 100-550 metres depending on the grade. It is commonly used for internal building backbones, connections between floors and links within data centres. Common multimode standards include OM3 and OM4, with OM4 supporting higher speeds over longer distances. Multimode is generally more cost-effective for shorter runs.

Single-Mode Fibre (SMF) Single-mode fibre is designed for long-distance transmission, potentially running to several kilometres. This makes it the standard choice for campus-wide networks, inter-building connections and links to external service providers. While single-mode infrastructure has a higher initial cost, it provides significantly greater reach and future bandwidth capacity.

Our engineers will assess your site and recommend the most appropriate fibre optic cable type for your specific requirements and budget.

Fibre Optic Cabling Solutions – What FlexNet Delivers

Our fibre optic cabling solutions cover everything from design through to installation, testing and handover. Every fibre installation is treated with the same rigour we apply to all structured cabling projects, because a poorly terminated fibre link is a performance problem waiting to happen.

FlexNet’s fibre optic cabling installation service includes:

  • Survey and network design – We assess your site, existing infrastructure, and connectivity requirements to design the right fibre solution
  • Fibre optic cable installation – Internal and external fibre runs, including armoured external fibre where required, installed correctly with appropriate containment and cable management
  • Fibre termination and splicing – Precision termination using fusion splicing or pre-terminated cassette solutions, depending on your requirements
  • Full handover documentation – Test results, as-built fibre records and any applicable warranty documentation
“To earn the trust of our clients by achieving their objectives and exceeding their expectations … however hard that may be.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is fibre optic network cabling and how does it work?

Fibre optic network cabling uses strands of glass or plastic to transmit data as pulses of light, rather than electrical signals over copper wire. This allows for significantly higher bandwidth, much longer transmission distances with no signal degradation and immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI).

What are the main fibre optic cable types I should know about?

The two main fibre optic cable types are multimode and single-mode. Multimode fibre (typically OM3 or OM4) is suited to shorter-distance connections within a building or campus, while single-mode fibre is designed for longer runs and higher bandwidth over distance.

How far can fibre optic cabling run?

How far fibre optic cabling can run depends on the cable type. Multimode fibre (OM3/OM4) typically supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 300-400 metres. Single-mode fibre can transmit data reliably over distances of several kilometres, making it ideal for connecting buildings on a campus or linking to external network providers.

What testing do you carry out on fibre optic cabling?

We test every installed fibre link using OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) testing and optical power meter testing to verify the performance and integrity of each link. Full test results are included in your project handover documentation.

How do I find reliable fibre optic installation contractors?

To find reliable fibre optic installers look for contractors with verifiable accreditations (ISO 9001, Safecontractor, ECS/CSCS), experience in your industry and a track record they can demonstrate.

Ask whether they test and certify their installations and whether they provide handover documentation. FlexNet ticks all of those boxes and with a client retention rate of over 95%, we let our work speak for itself. Get in touch to discuss your fibre optic cabling installation requirements.
